THE RUB
The New York Rangers opened the Eastern Conference final with one of their worst showings of the postseason, but rebounded with a 2-1 overtime win against the Florida Panthers on Friday. The series now shifts to Sunrise, Fla., for Game 3 on Sunday afternoon.
Barclay Goodrow’s game-winning goal at 14:01 of overtime helped the Rangers even the series. Florida won Game 1 with a 3-0 victory on Wednesday. Despite the loss, Florida coach Paul Maurice was satisfied with his team’s effort.
The Panthers countered Vincent Trocheck’s early goal with Carter Verhaeghe’s power-play tally. Sergei Bobrovsky has stopped 52 shots in the first two games, and Florida has kept New York scoreless on six power plays.
Goodrow’s winning sequence began with a defensive zone faceoff win and ended with a shot from the right faceoff circle. Igor Shesterkin matched Bobrovsky’s postseason performance with a 2.22 GAA. The Rangers showed a physical edge, with Alexis Lafreniere’s big hit leading to Trocheck’s goal.
Coach Peter Laviolette might tweak the lineup again if Jimmy Vesey is unable to play due to an upper-body injury.
