THE RUB

Following a stifling 3-0 loss to the Panthers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Rangers’ coach Peter Laviolette emphasized the need for improvement. The Rangers, trailing in a series for the first time this postseason, will seek to bounce back in Game 2 on Friday night in New York.

After starting the playoffs with seven straight wins and scoring 35 goals in their first 10 games, the Rangers managed just 24 shots on goal in Game 1, marking the fifth consecutive game they were held under 30 shots. The Rangers’ offense struggled, with Artemi Panarin, Alexis Lafreniere, and Vincent Trocheck combining for a minus-8 rating and New York going 0-for-2 on the power play.

Florida won its fourth straight road game of the playoffs, capitalizing on opportunities and strong goaltending from Sergei Bobrovsky, who allowed two goals or fewer for the sixth straight game. Matthew Tkachuk scored his fifth goal of the postseason, with Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Bennett also finding the net.

Bobrovsky faced under 25 shots for the seventh time in the postseason, helping secure the win with key saves, especially in the third period. The Panthers aim to maintain their strong defense as they head into Game 2.
