TONIGHT’S BEST MLB PICK
ATLANTA @ PHILADELPHIA
The Phillies are looking to take the season series lead and sweep the doubleheader on Thursday night, and with Zack Wheeler on the mound, they’re in a strong position to do just that.
Braves Outlook –
Chris Sale has been solid overall this season with a 3.36 ERA, but he’s struggled against Philadelphia—allowing five runs in 4.2 innings the last time he faced them and posting a career 5.46 ERA vs. the Phillies. Atlanta’s offense has been quiet lately, and their road record continues to disappoint. They’re scoring just 4.08 runs per game (20th in MLB), with Ozzie Albies slumping and Ronald Acuña Jr. still working back to form.
Marcell Ozuna remains the team’s most consistent threat with a .896 OPS and nine home runs, but he hasn’t had much help. The Braves’ pitching staff has been decent (3.70 ERA, 15th), but their offense continues to drag.
Phillies Outlook –
Zack Wheeler is on a tear, especially in May—sporting a ridiculous 0.68 ERA for the month and a 2.42 mark on the season. He’s been dominant, posting a 6-1 record with a 0.88 WHIP, and his 3.10 career ERA in 31 meetings vs. Atlanta suggests he’ll be tough to crack again.
Philadelphia’s offense is also hot, led by Kyle Schwarber (MLB-leading 18 HR, .962 OPS) and a surging Alec Bohm (.915 OPS in May). The Phillies average 4.85 runs per game (6th in MLB), and their pitching staff continues to shine with a 3.65 ERA (11th).
Pick – Philadelphia ML
Chris Sale has been reliable, but the Braves’ bats can’t be trusted right now—especially against a locked-in Zack Wheeler. With Philly rolling both on the mound and at the plate, and Atlanta struggling away from home, this is a great spot for the Phillies to close out the series.
