DETROIT TIGERS @ CLEVELAND GUARDIANS
Cleveland kept its hopes alive with a gritty 5-4 win over Detroit on Thursday, snapping a streak of 11 straight postseason elimination losses.
The Guardians took an early lead, adding insurance runs in the later innings, and held the Tigers to just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. First baseman David Fry praised the team’s resilience, saying, “We have a bunch of tough dudes. We get down 2-1 and we’re in the locker room like it’s just another day.”
Cleveland turns to Matthew Boyd, who was nice this season despite missing most of the year making his way back from from elbow surgery. Boyd pitched 4.2 scoreless innings in Game 2 and will be counted on again.
Detroit squandered a chance to close out the series at home, leaving eight runners stranded. The Tigers will now rely on their ace, Tarik Skubal, to deliver in the series finale.
Skubal has been nearly unhittable in the postseason, holding Cleveland scoreless across 13 combined innings in two ALDS starts. Manager A.J. Hinch is confident with Skubal on the mound, and for good reason—he’s been a Cy Young-caliber pitcher all year. With a 0.92 WHIP and 10.69 K/9 ratio, Skubal gives Detroit a distinct edge, and the Tigers’ offense has proven they can come through in key moments.
Expect Detroit to finish the job in Game 5, with Skubal giving them the upper hand in a tight, tense finale. Bet on the Tigers to advance.
