The New York Rangers began the Stanley Cup playoffs with seven straight victories but now face a critical Game 6 against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night in Raleigh, N.C.

The Rangers, leading 3-2 in the best-of-seven series, have twice allowed the Hurricanes to stave off elimination, losing 4-3 in Game 4 and 4-1 in Game 5.

Coach Peter Laviolette emphasized the need for increased desperation as the series progresses. Carolina, led by coach Rod Brind’Amour, has found momentum with Evgeny Kuznetsov scoring key goals in the past two games.

Artemi Panarin and Adam Fox need to improve for the Rangers, while Filip Chytil’s return remains uncertain.

Carolina’s Brett Pesce is unlikely to play due to a lower-body injury. Kuznetsov expects a fierce battle in Game 6.

PLAYER TRENDS

  • Mika Zibanejad has 1+ assists in 14 of the Rangers’ last 15 games.
  • Brady Skjei has 1+ assists in 7 of the Hurricanes’ last 8 home games.
  • Chris Kreider has scored in 6 of the Rangers’ last 8 road games.
  • Alexis Lafreniere has scored in 3 of the Rangers’ last 4 games.
  • Evgeny Kuznetsov has scored in each of the Hurricanes’ last 2 games.

Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet challenged his team after a disappointing Game 4 loss to the Oilers, leaving their Western Semi tied 2-2. Tocchet criticized about half a dozen players for not performing up to par, including Elias Pettersson, who has only one goal and three assists in 10 postseason games. Pettersson acknowledged his struggles and expressed a desire to improve.

The Oilers head into Game 5 with renewed confidence after Evan Bouchard’s game-winning goal and strong defensive play in Game 4. Veteran goaltender Calvin Pickard earned a win in his first NHL playoff start, making 19 saves.

Edmonton, known for its offensive prowess, has scored a power-play goal in every playoff game. Coach Kris Knoblauch praised the team’s defensive effort, which they hope to continue as the series resumes.
