Dallas Stars coach Peter DeBoer remains cautious despite his team’s three straight wins, putting the Colorado Avalanche on the brink of elimination in their Western Conference second-round series. The Stars hold a commanding 3-1 lead, with Game 5 set for Wednesday in Dallas.
“It’s good, but we also know the final one is always the toughest to win,” DeBoer said after Monday’s 5-1 victory in Denver. “We’re going to anticipate that the next game is going to be the toughest to win.”
The Stars/North Stars franchise has won 12 of 13 series when leading 3-1, clinching the series in Game 5 on six occasions.
Wyatt Johnston scored twice on Monday, boosting his career postseason goal total to 11, tied for seventh-most by any player under 21. He celebrated his 21st birthday on Tuesday.
Defenseman Miro Heiskanen also notched a three-point performance with one goal and two assists.
Casey Mittelstadt scored the lone goal for the Avalanche, who lost Valeri Nichushkin to a six-month suspension. The Avalanche power play is 0-for-8 over the past three games, while Dallas has scored two short-handed goals during that stretch.
