Let’s do this…
Atlanta Hawks
Last Season: 29-53
Line: 33.5
Even though it was lauded a monumental mistake trading away the 3rd pick, Trae Young ended up being just about as good at season’s end. Also the future pick from Dallas and their own landed them some talent in De’Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish. Still a very young core, will struggle to break 30 wins.
Prediction: Under
Boston Celtics
Last Season: 49-33
Line: 48.5
Fell 9 games under last year’s 58 line with a very much maligned and over hyped outing. The Kyrie Free Agency narrative didn’t help, with superfan Bill Simmons predicting a 67-win season got everyone talking and laughing at the same time. With Kyrie shipped out for Kemba and Big Al Horford replaced by Kanter, could be a similar result this season.
Prediction: Under
Brooklyn Nets
Last Season: 42-40
Line: 45.5
The Nets went shopping during the offseason and got back a very nice return in Durant, Irving and Jordan (the Lob-City version). Brooklyn made the post season for the first time in a long time but the city will have to wait another 12 months to see to their new look team with Durant ruled out for the year. Although they did add some depth to cover and could make up an additional couple of wins.
Prediction: Over
Charlotte Hornets
Last Season: 39-43
Line: 24.5
Tied up with some really bad contracts, the Hornets are one of a very few teams who got worse over the offseason. Covering the loss of Kemba Walker with Scary Terry Rozier, lottery balls will be the focus.
Prediction: Under (LOCK)
Chicago Bulls
Last Season: 22-60
Line: 30.5
Hit early in 208/19 with an injury to rising star Laurie Markkanen, the Bulls couldn’t get out of first gear and didn’t get a win against quality opposition until February. Drafted well and picked up some veterans in Thaddeus Young and Tomas Satoransky sees them improving.
Prediction: Over
Cleveland Cavaliers
Last Season: 19-63
Line: 24.5
No significant change to the roster spells no change to the win total. Even if Kevin Love is fit, he struggled to improve the Wolves position back when he was pounding the glass in Minnesota.
Prediction: Under (LOCK)
Dallas Mavericks
Last Season: 33-49
Line: 40.5
The Porzingis trade mid-season saw the Mavs basically throw away the rest of the year with season 19/20 the focus. Luka Doncic won the Rookie of the Year which makes things even more interesting. If Porzingis stays on the court, Dallas could break the 40 wins. We are going with some optimism.
Prediction: Over
Denver Nuggets
Last Season: 54-28
Line: 52.5
Although they stumbled in the playoffs, Denver still look primed to have another 50 win season. Blessed with a league leading home court advantage (34-7) and some handy pickups, the Nuggets will be able to back it up.
Prediction: Over (LOCK)
Detroit Pistons
Last Season: 41-41
Line: 37.5
The success of the Pistons heavily relies on the health of Blake Griffin, who battled most of year to stay fit. Solid adds in Markieff Morris and Derrick Rose provides additional fire power to assist Griffin with the scoring load.
Prediction: Over (LOCK)
Golden State Warriors
Last Season: 57-25
Line: 48.5
A retooled Warriors team will have a very different look for season 19/20. After sustained success for the last 5 years, Golden State will rely heavily on Curry and Green to keep the ship on course with Thompson likely out until at least after the All-Star break. Even with the add in D’Angelo Russell, covering the loss of Durant and Thompson will be too much to break 50 wins again. Have to assume a Curry sprained ankle is on the cards too.
Prediction: Under (LOCK)
Houston Rockets
Last Season: 53-29
Line: 53.5
Similar to the Celtics, Houston started very slow with many thinking the reign was coming to an end. However James Harden returned to his MVP form just after Christmas and things got back on track for another 50 win season. Throw in Russell Westbrook and the Rockets are ready to contend again.
Prediction: Over (LOCK)
Indiana Pacers
Last Season: 48-34
Line: 47.5
The Pacers had back to back years of 48-34 win/loss records and its not surprising they are right on that 47.5 line again. Big uncertainty on when Oladipo will return, Indiana went shopping and collected Lamb, Warren and Brogdan to fill the void.
Prediction: Over
Los Angeles Clippers
Last Season: 48-34
Line: 55.5
The biggest Keyser Soze move of Free Agency was signing Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, and the Clippers are ready to make that Title run. However, they will be more active in the post season when it matters with both superstars to be managed throughout the year.
Prediction: Under
Los Angeles Lakers
Last Season: 37-45
Line: 51.5
The Lakers made an offer the Pelicans couldn’t refuse for Anthony Davis, with the Clippers basically turning to them saying, “Hold my Beer!”. Its pretty much now or never for the Lakers to bring another Ring for the King. Will be aiming for a top 4 finish in the West.
Prediction: Over
Memphis Grizzlies
Last Season: 33-49
Line: 26.5
The Grizzlies have officially started the rebuild and nabbing Ja Morant as the 2nd pick was a great start. The team will be super young with Jonas Valanciunas looking like the only veteran presence in the locker room.
Prediction: Under
Miami Heat
Last Season: 39-42
Line: 42.5
The Heat shipped out Wade, Whiteside and Richardson and officially made South Beach Jimmy Butler’s to own. One more Superstar is needed for this Miami team to improve.
Prediction: Under
Milwaukee Bucks
Last Season: 60-22
Line: 56.5
A 60 win season saw the Bucks secure the number 1 seed in the East while not-forgetting an MVP trophy for the Greek Freak. Although they ran into an unstoppable force in Kawhi in the post season, they are restocked with quality depth to lead the East again.
Prediction: Over (LOCK)
Minnesota Timberwolves
Last Season: 36-47
Line: 35.5
The Wolves season was in free fall as soon as it began with the Jimmy Butler saga/drama. They made the trade, but it was always going to be tough to get back, especially after firing the coach not long after. They were a 47-win team the season prior and just scraped into the post season. With most teams getting better in the West, might be a similar record for this upcoming season.
Prediction: Under (LOCK)
New Orleans Pelicans
Last Season: 33-49
Line: 38.5
Using the Anthony Davis trade to basically start up a new Franchise, the Pelicans secured the phenom Zion Williamson, while partnering him with some veterans in Reddick, Favors and the LeBron supporting cast that failed to produce last season. Will be an exciting team to watch for obvious reasons but can’t see them at 39 wins.
Prediction: Under (LOCK)
New York Knicks
Last Season: 17-65
Line: 27.5
The Knicks 2018/19 record resembles a Franchise that gave up everything to land Zion, but in coming home empty handed, there isn’t much hope. Would take the Bulls roster any day.
Prediction: Under
Oklahoma City Thunder
Last Season: 49-33
Line: 32.5
The Thunder pulled the pin and went into rebuild mode by trading Westbrook and George for a heap of picks. Something suggests that they aren’t finished with the player movement and wanting to help their own lottery chances.
Prediction: Under (LOCK)
Orlando Magic
Last Season: 42-40
Line: 41.5
The Magic finished 7th in the East and look likely to repeat again with no real suitors below looking to challenge. Will be line ball in win totals and may do a little better than last if former-number 1 draft pick Fultz can get back on the court.
Prediction: Over
Philadelphia 76ers
Last Season: 51-31
Line: 53.5
The 76ers were a game 7 buzzer beater from almost going all the way. They made some aggressive moves in free agency and have now become the tallest team in the league. Will be hard to defend but could lose in the pace game. We are banking it pays off.
Prediction: Over (LOCK)
Phoenix Suns
Last Season: 19-63
Line: 27.5
The Suns fell 14 games behind Dallas finishing dead last in the West. They did make some moves in securing Rubio, Baynes and Saric but not enough to increase their win total by 50%.
Prediction: Under
Portland Trailblazers
Last Season: 53-29
Line: 46.5
The Blazers had another big year on the back of Lillard and McCollum reaching the 50-win milestone. Big difference for this season will be the lack of bench depth with Curry, Harkless and Aminu finding new homes. Could bring them back down to the pack.
Prediction: Under (LOCK)
Sacramento Kings
Last Season: 39-43
Line: 37.5
It had been a while since the Kings were relevant and season 2018/19 brought them back into the spotlight for all the right reasons. Point guard Fox made the jump while rookie Bagley Jr is going to be a star. May struggle to back it up with the West getting stronger, should be around the mark again.
Prediction: Under
San Antonio Spurs
Last Season: 48-34
Line: 45.5
Is San Antonio basketball starting to crumble? Not making a major signing in free agency does spell some doubt over this season, with Popovich settling for role payers outside of Aldridge and DeRozan. Do not have the star power to get 50+ wins this year.
Prediction: Under (LOCK)
Toronto Raptors
Last Season: 58-24
Line: 45.5
The loss of Kawhi will be interesting and even though he was managed throughout the season, Vegas has them looking to drop 13 games. The Raptors do still have a strong home record and will have enough to get above the 45 wins.
Prediction: Over
Utah Jazz
Last Season: 50-32
Line: 53.5
The Jazz got above 50 wins with the DPOY in Rudy Gobert and young gun Donovan Mitchell. Throw in some veteran leadership in Conley, Bogdanovic and Ed Davis and the Jazz may get to the heights of the Stockton/Malone days.
Prediction: Over (LOCK)
Washington Wizards
Last Season: 32-50
Line: 26.5
Fair to say its going to be a tough year for the Wizards. John Wall will miss the entire season and Bradley Beal will have to carry the load. Could there be a mid season trade to blow up this team officially? Either way, will be the same result.
Prediction: Under
