THE RUB
The Celtics have a historic opportunity going into Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Friday. A win would not only complete a sweep of the Mavericks but also break a tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for the most NBA championships, giving Boston 18 titles.
The Celtics have dominated the playoffs and continued their form with a 106-99 win in Game 3, taking a 3-0 lead. NBA teams are 156-0 when leading 3-0 in any best-of-seven series, and Boston’s 10-game winning streak and perfect 7-0 road record this postseason reinforce their strong position.
Boston’s depth has been a huge factor. While Tatum struggled offensively in the first two games, Jaylen Brown and Jrue Holiday stepped up. Tatum then scored 31 points in Game 3. The Celtics also managed without center Kristaps Porzingis (left leg), who remains day-to-day.
Boston’s defense has held Dallas to fewer than 100 points in each game of the Finals, a stark contrast to the Mavericks’ performance against the Timberwolves in the Western finals. Even with 62 combined points from Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in Game 3, the rest of the team managed just 37 points.
Despite the odds, Doncic remains hopeful, citing the team’s resilience in cutting a 21-point deficit to one in Game 3 as a positive sign.
Boston are 7-0 against the Mavs in 2023/24, that speaks volumes.
