The Hawks smashed the Bulls 124-104 on the road, while the Grizzlies were smashed 131-119 at home by the Spurs in their openers on Wednesday.
The Grizzlies easily took care of the Hawks in both meetings last year, winning by 39 in Atlanta to set a franchise record for its largest road win. Five days later they won by 17 in Memphis.
The Grizzlies wasted a career-high 44 points from Ja Morant in their season opener, one shy of the franchise record. Morant scored 34 points in the second half.
Atlanta had a huge shooting night in the opener, scoring 42 points in the first quarter, 41 in the second quarter and led 83-59 at halftime. The Hawks shot 53.8 percent from the floor and had seven players in double figures. Trae Young scored 37 with seven assists and six rebounds in 26 minutes.
Expect the scorers table to be busy tonight.

MJ coughed up some serious dough for this guy, and the Cuban cigars will be getting a lot of chew if he doesn’t perform.
Charlotte handed Gordon Hayward $32m per year in the off-season, and although a role player with Boston it’s easy to forget that he’s still capable of getting points in volume.
Rozier was the hero in the Hornet’s opener with 42 points, but Hayward notched up 28 points from 18 attempts.
Hayward gave away a lot of his game with the Celtics and a big lockeroom guy, willing to sacrifice, but at Charlotte the new norm will have to be 18+ field goal attempts a game or bust.
Like Hayward to score 20+ when he takes on the Thunder tonight.

LaMelo Ball, the No. 3 overall pick, went scoreless in Wednesday’s 121-114 loss to the Cavs. He wend 0-5 from the floor and had three turnovers in 16 minutes.
Ball was the first top-three pick to be held scoreless in his NBA debut since Otto Porter Jr. in 2013, and just the fourth in the last 15 seasons, joining Porter, Hasheem Thabeet and Greg Oden.
Gordon Hayward had 28 points and 7 assists in the opener after missing the final two preseason games with a broken finger.
OKC’s season opener in Houston was postponed after the Rockets were left without the required eight players available due to COVID-19 contact tracing protocol.
Only five players remain at OKC from last year’s roster, and only 22-year-old Diallo is from the 2018-19 roster.
OKC do not have a good outlook this year, and there is no way in hell there will be a dime out of my pocket going towards them in 2020/21.

The Cavs’ offense was cruIsing against the Hornets in their season opener, making 52.9% from the field and assisted on 34 of 46 made field goals on the way to a 121-114 win.
Detroit lost their opener to Minnesota 111-101 on Wednesday after leading most of the game. The T-Wolves scored the last 11 points and outscored Detroit 31-16 in the fourth quarter.
Killian Hayes, the #7 pick of this year’s draft, was thrown into the fire, and couldn’t get a handlge on the ball committing four turnovers in 21 minutes, including back-to-back turnovers in the final quarter that did not help the Pistons’ cause.

The Magic kept the scorer’s table busy en route to recording a 4-game season sweep of the Wizards last season.

The 76ers led by 13 points with five minutes left in the first half before Washington went on a 22-8 run to take a 59-58 lead into halftime. Philly were down by as many as 12 points in the 3rd quarter and trailed 83-73 entering the 4th quarter before finding their gear and outscoring the Wizards 40-24 over the final 12 minutes to snatch a 113-107 win.
The Knicks faded in the 2nd half of a 121-107 loss to the Pacers but spent nearly three quarters exceeding expectations before looking like a team in the beginning of yet another lengthy rebuild.

After playing just 36 games in the 2018-19 and 19 last season, Oladipo scored 22 points in a 121-107 home win over the Knicks on Wednesday.
The Pacers won their first game under new coach Bjorkgren after Nate McMillan got the Pacers into the playoffs in each of his four seasons but couldn’t get the team out of the first round. The final straw came shortly afte losing to the Heat in last season’s opening round.
One game into the Donovan era, Chicago showed that any great improvement will take some time. Chicago loast 124-104 in their opener against Hawks, giving up 42 points in the first quarter and 83 in the first half.

The Spurs are coming off a huge131-119 win at Memphis. All five of the Spurs’ starters had at least 16 points and 7 players were in double-figure scoring in the win. DeRozan scored 28 points to lead a balanced offensive attack.
Toront will look to get some swagger after a 113-99 loss to the Pelicans. Toronto was outscored 38-22 in the 3rd quarter and 63-42 in the 2nd half, relying too much on the 3-point shot, missing all 10 long-range attempts in the third quarter and were just 14 of 46 from beyond the arc for the game.
The two teams split their series last year. The Spurs own a 34-14 all-time edge over Toronto, including a 19-5 mark in games played in San Antonio.

Karl-Anthony Towns led Minnesota to the 111-101 win with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists, in his first game since his mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, died of complications from COVID-19 in April.
“You may see me smiling and stuff, but that Karl died on April 13th,” Towns said after the win. “He’s never coming back. I don’t remember that man. I don’t know that man. You’re talking to the physical me, but my soul has been killed off a long time ago.”
Utah began the season with a very solid 120-100 blowout win at Portland.
Rudy Gobert had an excellent season premiere with 20 points and 17 rebounds to lead the visitors. The Jazz amassed 50 3-point attempts, with Bogdanovic, Conley and Mitchell each hitting four 3-pointers.

The Kings haven’t made the playoffs over the past 14 seasons, and the Suns have gone 10 seasons without making for the postseason.
Sacramento posted a hotly contested 124-122 overtime win over the Nuggets on Wednesday, while Phoenix held off Dallas for a 106-102 home win on the same night. Sac had seven players score in double digits.
