Who are William Hill Australia?
Formerly named Sportingbet, William Hill is licensed in the NT of Australia and are one of the most well-established bookmakers in Australia and the UK.
Sportingbet was launched in 2003 by the UK basked Sporting Group who themselves have been around since 1998. The Sportingbet Group bought out Centrebet in 2011 and from there Centrebet and Sportingbet overtook a redesign which saw them share the same odds and markets, but offering different betting promotions.
William Hill, one of the UK’s biggest betting brands then acquired Sportingbet and Centrebet, and shortly after acquired the short lived ‘Tom Waterhouse’ betting site in 2013. Since then any traffic arriving to ‘Tom Waterhouse’ is redirected to William Hill, which is both annoying and ridiculous.
William Hill has been listed on the UK Stock Exchange since 2002 and are the largest UK operator, representing around 25% of the market throughout Ireland and the United Kingdom.
On average William Hill’s betting shops (TAB’s to us) process more than one million betting slips on average daily. To date William hill own over 2,300 “betting shops”.
Tom Waterhouse was appointed Chief Executive Officer of William Hill Australia in July 2014.
William Hill Website Layout
William Hill uses a full width layout for their website, however it’s done quite well. It’s the usual three column layout, however the center section of the site moves as you scroll, while the LHS and RHS menus stay static. This enables you to scroll up and down the list of ‘Next to Jump’ racing and ‘Next to Go’ sports markets.
The overall length of the homepage is short (take note Ladbrokes). The design is responsive and operates well no matter how much you adjust your screen size.
The LHS menu is basic, featuring seven major categories including Racing, Sports, Planet Lottery, In-Play Betting, Blog and Rewards.
The Sports menus expand dynamically to display subcategories for leagues and markets, and is by far the best design for a LHS menu that we’ve seen.
The Racing menu does not expand as does the Sports, but instead refreshes the center section to display markets. The great thing however is that it is dynamic and the page will not refresh when switching between thoroughbred, greyhound and harness. But more on that further on.
One interesting thing to note is that the RHS contains only the Betslip, which itself will only display if there is a bet added.
Another great feature of the homepage is the banner, which uses tabs to name the promotions to enable you to click on a promotion directly. The banners look great and have the added benefit of being able to select a market and add to betslip.
The William Hill website is clean, simple and well designed.
William Hill Sports Markets –
Visiting the main sports category page will expand the LHS menu to show all sports, and the center will display the 3-5 most relevant sports and their markets.
Tabs at the top of the center section enable the user to filter time-frames of events from 1-6hrs, 6-12 hrs and 12-24hrs.
Also at the top of the markets are is the ability to filter the main upcoming sports, and an interesting function with buttons to select all ‘Favourites’ and ‘Outsiders’. Clicking this will automatically select all favourites or underdogs on the page. Once selected, you are then able to directly enter a stake amount, to win, usually at ridiculous odds.
NBA Day and Single match markets –
The main page for NBA betting will display the upcoming games for the current day’s play, and sometimes odds for the following if available, with H2H, line and margin markets available to select.
The NBA single game markets page is also very well laid out.
All popular markets are displayed front and center including a Pick Your Own Line drop-down menu below the line markets.
Tabs above the main markets will switch the entire center center section of the display without refreshing the page, and we’d have to say that when it comes to appearance and ease of use in regards to standard and exotic markets, this is the best we’ve seen.
William Hill Racing Markets –
William Hill offers an extensive racing line-up that includes thoroughbred, harness and greyhounds events across Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK and Ireland.
Thoroughrbred, greyhound and harness category pages are all formatted the same, and feature the usual racing layout.
Individual Race Markets –
The individual race markets are fantastic, and even feature a line graph to show fluctuations in the market for each individual runner.
Win/Place, Quinella, Trifecta, Exacta, First Four, Multi and “Super Exotic” markets are offered. Best Tote (Tatts, NSW, Vic), fixed odds and best fluc odds are available on most thoroughbred races, tote and fixed odds are available on harness events and the totes are available on greyhounds.
William Hill’s Form racing form guide opens into a new window and runs through a seperate sub domain. The opening of a new window in the browser is a good idea and allows you to switch from the form guide to the markets very easily, particularly on desktop.
The form guide is brilliant and features extensive information for all runner in each race and also tabs which allow you to switch between information between Jockeys, Trainers, Sires and more.
A+ for these boys.
The William Hill Bet Slip
The William Hill betslip has a Quick Bet feature that lets you place a bet in a pop up window directly following clicking a market, which is great for those times when there’s 7.2 seconds until the jump and your mate has a “sure thing”.
The main RHS betslip contains everything that you’d expect, with the inclusion of a Cashout notification for bets that are able for early cashout.
When three or more legs are added to the betslip all multi combinations are displayed should you wish to select Doubles, Trebles, 4 Folds, and so on. Exotic multiples such as Trixie, Patent, Yankee and Lucky 31 are also listed. A lacking feature in the betting slip is Flexi betting. You can’t choose the total cost of an exotic multi, only select the stake amount per leg.
